PIPEON featured in The Wall Street Journal: robotics and AI for the sewer networks beneath our feet

The Wall Street Journal has featured the EU-funded PIPEON project in a video exploring how autonomous robots could help inspect ageing sewer networks and prevent sewage spills.

Titled “The Tiny Robot Designed to Solve a Massive Underground Crisis”, the feature introduces the challenges facing wastewater infrastructure and the research underway to improve how these essential networks are inspected and maintained.

The video features PIPEON coordinator Professor Maarja Kruusmaa from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), alongside Professor Simon Tait and Will Shepherd from the University of Sheffield, sharing insights into the project’s work and the difficulties of operating robots underground.

As sewer networks age and face growing pressure from urban populations and changing weather patterns, utilities need better information to identify deterioration and prioritise maintenance. Conventional inspections can be slow, costly and labour-intensive, making it difficult to assess extensive underground networks.

PIPEON is developing autonomous robotic systems, advanced sensors and AI tools to support sewer inspection and maintenance. The project aims to help utilities detect problems earlier, assess pipe conditions and plan interventions more effectively, reducing the risk of failures and pollution.

Working in sewers presents significant research challenges: robots must navigate confined, harsh environments where visibility, communications and recognisable landmarks can be limited. By bringing together expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence and water engineering, PIPEON is working towards solutions that can operate with less direct human intervention.

The Wall Street Journal feature brings this European research to an international audience, highlighting both the importance of wastewater infrastructure and the potential of robotics to help protect it.

The PIPEON consortium thanks journalists Conor Finnegan and George Downs for covering the project and its partners for their continued contributions.
